Sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and presented by Hong Kong dizi and xiao virtuoso Kung Wai Kin, the bamboo flute suite “Hong Kong Impressions: A Chinese Bamboo Flute Suite — Solo Chinese Bamboo Flute Recital by Kung Wai Kin” will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday, 7 September 2026, at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall.
 
The concert is artistically directed by Professor Zhan Yongming, a renowned bamboo flute educator, performer, and doctoral supervisor. Kung Wai Kin, currently a Distinguished Professor at the School of Music and Dance of Zhoukou Normal University and the first doctoral graduate in Bamboo Flute Performance from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, will collaborate with distinguished musicians — pianist Xiong Zhuangzhuang (from the Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Artistic Music, Hangzhou) and yangqin performer Bryan Lai (Hong Kong) — to deliver a high-calibre musical feast of Chinese music. The concert will last approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.

Programme Highlights

Themed around “Hong Kong Impressions”, the recital fuses traditional refinement, contemporary innovation, and local Hong Kong sentiment into one cohesive musical narrative.
 
The first half features a selection of classical and modern masterpieces, including:
 
West Lake in Early Spring — a picturesque portrayal of Hangzhou’s spring scenery, composed by Professor Zhan Yongming.
Blossoming Orchid in Spring — an elegant tribute to the orchid’s grace and fragrance, composed by bamboo flute masters Zhao Songting and Cao Xing.

Horse Herding — composed by Zhou Chenglong, former Deputy Director of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, characterised by its lively rhythm and exuberant spirit.

 
Two major premieres follow:

Autumn Evening, composed by Kong Dejie and Zhao Qi, paints a tranquil and poetic autumn night (Hong Kong premiere).

The commissioned premiere, Night City, composed by Hong Kong composer Luk Wai Chun, depicts the city’s dynamic urban landscape through a contemporary lens.
 
The second half opens with the world premiere of Resonance in the Secluded Bamboo Grove, co-composed by Leung Si Wai and Kung Wai Kin, evoking a realm of purity and serenity — “the clarity of sound, the tranquility of heart.”
 
The recital culminates in the Hong Kong premiere of Kung Wai Kin’s original bamboo flute suite “Hong Kong Impressions”, a heartfelt musical portrait of his home city, expressed through three movements:

Charm of Victoria Harbour — shimmering reflections and vibrant energy over the waves;

Capriccio on Causeway Bay — the pulse and rhythm of urban life and bustling streets;

Atop Victoria Peak — a majestic panoramic view symbolising affection and aspiration for Hong Kong, bringing the concert to its emotional climax.

About Kung Wai Kin

Kung Wai Kin has received numerous national and international awards, including the “Songting Cup”, “Dunhuang Cup”, and “Yungang Cup” for Chinese instrumental performance, among others. He serves as an adjudicator for various bamboo flute competitions and has performed at major music festivals such as the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival and the Singapore Chinese Music Festival.
 
Known for his virtuosic technique and fusion of traditional depth with modern creativity, Kung has also collaborated with world-renowned musicians, including cellist Trey Lee and members of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, earning widespread acclaim.
 
This concert promises to be a captivating blend of artistic mastery and Hong Kong cultural essence, inviting all lovers of Chinese music and heritage to experience the unique charm of “Hong Kong Impressions.”
